1. ROOP JI NASHTA CENTRE

Roop Ji Nashta Centre in Udaipur is a cherished local treasure known for its authentic flavors and heartwarming hospitality. During a morning stroll through the bustling lanes of Bada Bazaar in the old city, I discovered this 60-year-old shop nestled in a narrow street. Despite its modest size, Roop Ji Nashta Centre offers an array of delicious snacks that are bursting with incredible taste.

This quaint eatery is renowned for serving some of the most delightful breakfasts and tea in Udaipur, all made with love and care. The building, with its aged charm, hints at the rich history behind this small but iconic spot. One of their standout items is the masala papad, also known as open samosa—a dish that has earned a reputation for its amazing flavour. They’re also famous for their kadhi kachori, bread pakode, dahi bada, gulab chai, kesar chai, and more.

We sampled their masala papad, which came with a crispy maida papad topped with spiced aloo masala, all for just 20 rupees. The open samosa was a delightful explosion of flavors in every bite. We also savoured their rose and saffron tea, both of which were incredibly delicious.

We talked with few customers and one of the regular customer said “Years ago even if you ask anyone for masala papad in Surajpole people used to suggest their shop.” The owners take pride in the fact that their snacks are prepared with just the right amount of spice, ensuring they are light on the stomach—a quality that has won over both locals and tourists alike. Roop Ji Nashta Centre truly deserves its fame, offering a taste of Udaipur’s culinary heritage that is not to be missed.

2. ONKAR JI PAKODE WALE

Exploring Udaipur’s Hidden Gem: Omkar Ji Pakode Wale

If you’re a food lover in Udaipur and haven’t experienced the flavors of Omkar Ji Pakode Wale yet, you’re missing out on something truly special! Nestled in the bustling Bapu Bazar, right in front of UCOS Bank, this small but beloved shop has been serving delectable fast (segari) pakode and sweets for over 70 years. It’s a go-to spot for those observing fasts as well as for anyone craving a delicious, traditional snack.

A Treat for the Fasting Season

I visited Omkar Ji Pakode Wale on the first Monday of Sawan, a day when many observe fasts. For those who are fasting, Omkar Ji’s pakode are a perfect choice. The shop offers an array of 100% sarak-segari (fast-friendly) food items, each brimming with flavor.

One of the highlights of my visit was their sabudana chaat, which included sabudana vada, curd, green chutney, sweet chutney, and their signature special masala. The combination of these elements was simply delightful, with the chutneys adding an extra punch to the already flavorful vada. I also tried their rajgira pakoda, known locally as kangadi, served with curd and chutneys. Both dishes offered a burst of flavors that perfectly complemented each other.

If you’re visiting on non-fasting days, you can enjoy their ramban chutney, a special garlic-based chutney that pairs wonderfully with the pakodas. For those who aren’t fasting, it’s an extra layer of indulgence that takes the experience to another level.

Must-Try Dishes

Apart from the sabudana chaat and rajgira pakoda, Omkar Ji Pakode Wale offers an enticing menu including:

  • Aloo bade
  • Rajgira mirchi bade
  • Sabudana khichdi

All these dishes are fast-friendly and come loaded with delicious flavors, ensuring that even during fasting days, you don’t have to compromise on taste. And the best part? Each item is priced at just ₹30, making it an incredibly pocket-friendly option!

A Unique Twist: Lankesh Pakode with Ramban Chutney

One of the most interesting things I noticed on their menu was Lankesh Pakode paired with Ramban chutney. Intrigued, I asked about the name and was told it came as a suggestion from a local pandit ji. The unique name adds a touch of local charm to the already flavorful dish.

Sweet Delights to Savor

Omkar Ji Pakode Wale doesn’t just excel at savory items. They also offer gulab jamun, which is available during Navratri and is suitable for those observing fasts. I’m definitely looking forward to trying these sweet treats when the festive season rolls around!

One of the sweetest aspects of this shop is the strong family vibe. The owners proudly declare their mother as the “Head of Incharge,” adding a heartwarming personal touch to their business. It’s evident that the love and care they put into their food come from a place of tradition and family pride.

My Experience

My experience at Omkar Ji Pakode Wale was nothing short of amazing. The blend of mouth-watering flavors, fast-friendly food, and the affordability makes this spot a must-visit in Udaipur. Whether you’re fasting or just looking to indulge in some local treats, Omkar Ji Pakode Wale will not disappoint.
