Our rejected ‘Pattal Dona’ is now foreign University’s biodegradable invention

Recently saw a video and tweet from foreign handle/pages mentioning about inventing ‘Leak-Proof Biodegradable Leaf Bowls’ and was stunned to know this, looking at the video and pictures which are doing the rounds of the internet, I mumbled ‘Ye to dona hai! ise to hum Indians sadiyo se use karke reject bhi kr chuke’ (this is dona, we Indians have now rejected it after using it for ages) and there were similar reactions from the fellow Indians, some laughed at it while some attempted to make desperate claims of the invention belonging to India. In between the shock and the discontent over the foreign claims, there remains an underlying fact that not just ‘Pattal Dona’ there are many inventions which we Indians didn’t value and thus we ourselves pushed them into oblivion, we tend to walk away from ‘the Indian thing’ and have fantasies for foreign stuffs.

Pattal Dona

Kachori served in dona

Pattal Dona are the dishes and bowls made from the leaves of ‘Sal’ or ‘Banyan’ tree. The leaves of the tree(fresh/dry) are stitched by piercing small, thin wooden sticks. Now there are modern machines which give the desired shape and finish just like our household dishes.Having food in leaf utensils imparts a different taste to it, that’s the reason some famous street food vendors still use leaf donas , above you can see a famous treet food ‘Kachori’ served in Dona.

There was a time when there used to be only ‘Pangat system'(sitting arrangement of serving food) for all the ceremony including wedding but gradually the western buffet took over the tradition and minds. There was no hygiene, no convenience still buffet was considered to be classy while the ‘Pangat System’ was looked as backward and hence the pangat/sitting system perished which also caused the ‘Pattal Dauna’ to Perish. Now we have toxic plates and bowls made of plastic and thermocol which has adverse effects on our health, they can even cause fatal diseases like cancer.

Here’s that tweet

We need to change, we need to value the rich legacy of our ancestors and bring it in front of the whole world so that they don’t remain ignorant and call it an invention.
